STATEMENT
Most of my paintings
are rooted in an emotional response to a piece of music or literature,
so I suppose that makes me an illustrator at heart. Even when I paint
‘traditional’ subjects, like flowers or landscapes, it’s
important to me that there is a an expressiveness involved
that hints at something more, a story.
I am most drawn
to — and influenced by — artists whose works are mysterious
and evocative, such as Andrew Wyeth, Ivan Albright, René Magritte,
Frida Kahlo, and Remedios Varo. There’s a story behind each of
their paintings that extends beyond their initial visual allure, which
is a quality I always hope to achieve with my own work. It pleases me
most as an artist to produce a work that is thought-provoking, even
unsettling.
